Residents of Silchar continue road side dumping; "Urge to avail door-to-door disposal": SMB

The Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) had announced earlier that they will not clean up junctions and the residents of the city must use the door to door collection to avoid depositing garbage on public areas like roadside or junctions. To promote door to door garbage collection and stop community dumping of garbage on public spaces, the Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) today took out a city-wide garbage cleaning campaign starting from Capital point to Central road via Bhowal point, then to Gopalganj, Goldighi mall and Premtola traffic point, to Civil Hospital and Veterinary, BTN office, Rangirkhari point, Sonai road and Hailakandi road up to Surana Motors.

The SMB has repeatedly requested the public of the city to not dump garbage at junctions and roadsides and rather opt for door to door collection of garbage by the Municipality to promote cleaner Silchar.

Talking to Barak Bulletin, Jessica Rose Lalsim, Executive Officer of the Silchar Municipal Board, said, “The door to door collection is a daily exercise. So far, the Municipality has distributed buckets to 14,000-15,000 households in the city for garbage collection. For the rest who are yet to accept the buckets, we’d like to appeal to them to start using them as soon as possible to keep our city clean.”

She adds, “As Silchar is a relatively small city compared to most others and is growing rapidly with time, issues like clogging of drains, urban floods, etc. are common nowadays. Unless the people of Silchar don’t stop dumping in public spaces, these aforementioned issues will never fade away. Hence, I appeal to every one of this city to support this door to door initiative and dump garbage responsibly to keep the city clean and hygienic.”

The Executive Officer of the SMB also appealed to the residents of Silchar to come up with further suggestions to keep the city ‘Swachh’ and ‘Sundar’. “To maintain Swachh Sundar Silchar, I also request the inhabitants to come up with their own suggestions so that together we can help the city become organised and clean for a better environment. We are also going to create some vending zones in the city where roadside vendors can sit and do their daily business.

She informed, “They’ll be provided with identity cards and space will be given to them for a particular period each day, so that traffic is not disturbed or overloaded. Under the Street Vendors Act of 2014, roadside vendors should be provided with a vending zone by the municipality and hence this decision has been taken to do as such. They run their livelihood through this daily business, and they can’t keep on getting evicted due to lack of commercial space. Hence, we’ve already selected a few spaces to use as vending zones for these roadside vendors of the city to keep the city less congested in certain areas”, said Jessica Rose Lalsim.
