Restricted Access Enforced on Gammon Bridge: Height Gauges Installed to Limit Heavy Vehicle Movement on NH-6
In a crucial move aimed at ensuring the safety of commuters, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) has imposed traffic restrictions on the Gammon Bridge over the Barak River on NH-6. This decision comes after a recent expert assessment raised concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge. The gauge will be installed at a 3-meter height.
The expert report, prepared by renowned bridge specialist Alok Bhowmick, was submitted on October 8, 2024, and emphasized the urgent need for precautionary measures. Acting on these recommendations, NHIDCL has decided to allow only light commercial vehicles, private cars, scooters, and auto-rickshaws to use the bridge, while heavy commercial vehicles are strictly prohibited until further notice.
To enforce this restriction, NHIDCL has begun installing 3-meter height gauges on the bridge. These physical barriers will prevent larger vehicles from accessing the bridge, ensuring that only those within the permitted categories are allowed through. The height gauges are expected to be fully operational within the next two days.
Gaurang Deoghare, NHIDCL’s Deputy General Manager (P), confirmed that these measures are essential for public safety and to prolong the bridge’s service life. He also emphasized the need for all concerned departments and authorities to swiftly disseminate this information to ensure smooth implementation of the new traffic regulations.
Commuters and transport operators are urged to adhere to the guidelines and remain vigilant for further updates on the bridge’s status.
This step reflects NHIDCL’s proactive approach to addressing critical infrastructure concerns while ensuring public safety on NH-6.
This is stated in a press release issued from the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations Barak Valley Zone Silchar Assam.
