Restrictions Imposed in Sribhumi Ahead of 12-Hour Bandh on Saturday

The District Magistrate of Sribhumi has issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), citing apprehensions of breach of peace and disturbance to law and order in view of a 12-hour bandh called by certain organisations on Saturday, September 6.

As per the order, restrictions will remain in force across the district from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM on September 6. These include:

  • Assembly of five or more persons without prior permission.
  • Organising bandhs, rallies, strikes, dharnas, or demonstrations without approval.
  • Carrying of weapons, explosives, or any suspicious items.
  • Obstruction of traffic and unauthorised parking of vehicles.
  • Use of loudspeakers or high-decibel sound-producing instruments without permission.

The order exempts Central and State Government employees on duty, as well as emergency services such as ambulances and fire services.

“This order shall come into immediate effect, and any violation will be punishable under the relevant provisions of law,” the District Magistrate stated in the order issued on Friday (September 5).

The bandh has been called in protest against the changing name of the district from Karimganj to Sribhumi. While several organisations oppose the name Sribhumi and want it restored to Karimganj, a significant section of people support the name Sribhumi and are opposed to these organisations.
