‘Revisiting Dima Hasao – In Search of a Rhythm’ – a book on Assam’s Dima Hasao district released
‘Revisiting Dima Hasao – In Search of a Rhythm’, a book written by Dr. Tanmay Bhattacharjee was unveiled today. The book sheds light on various facets of life in Dima Hasao, Assam’s only completely hill district. Dima Hasao, blessed with pristine natural beauty is home to a diverse demography, where many indigenous tribal communities have lived in harmony with a number of non-tribal groups for ages. However, very little academic work has taken place so far about this fascinating part of the country.
The book was unveiled at a formal function in New Delhi today, by Special DG, Border Security Force, Dr. Sujoy Lal Thaosen and Cyber Security Expert & noted columnist Subimal Bhattacharjee.
“I had the privilege of working in Haflong for close to two decades. During this period, I travelled extensively in the district and interacted with the locals. This book is a collection of my observations from those years. In between the region also went through a few years of turmoil. After the return of peace, I visited Haflong again in search of the same old peace and tranquillity I had experienced before. The title of the book also reflects this,” Dr. Bhattacharjee said during the launch.
Dr. Thaosen, in his address, said, “the foreword of the book provides a glimpse of the issues and complexities of the society there. Dima Hasao is a wonderful melting pot of different communities. It would be great to release the book in Dima Hasao so that the younger generation, the academic fraternity and the larger population there can also get access to such a valuable book.”
Subimal Bhattacharjee, appreciated the research efforts taken up by the author to document the Dima Hasao region. “Dr. Bhattacharjee’s penchant for research, writing and getting deep into the subject will tremendously benefit academic discourse about this area. This book has come at the right time when the government is also focussing on raising awareness about the region. Such kind of books are ethnically and politically very important and should be taken to the people of the country.”
Dr. Tanmay Bhattacharjee retired from the department of Political Science in Assam University in Silchar. Prior to his tenure in Silchar, he also worked in the government colleges in Diphu and Haflong. He has written a number of books on the tribal communities of both Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. His book, ‘The Sylhet Referendum – Story of a Lost Territory’ is one of his most acclaimed works. His books, ‘Sociology of the Karbis’, ‘Kanch Sangbad (Bengali)’ and ‘Diphu-Haflong e 27 bochor (Bengali)’ are some of his books on this region.
The book, ‘Revisiting Dima Hasao – In Search of a Rhythm’ has been published by Om Sons Publications, New Delhi. The book is available online on all leading e-commerce platforms such as Flipkart and Amazon. It shall also be made available at all leading book stores in the north east.
