Riyan Parag's historic ton shines bright in otherwise mediocre performance from Assam against Chhattisgarh

Assam captain Riyan Parag’s century was the only highlight worth mentioning in the recently concluded Ranji Trophy tie between Assam and Chhattisgarh played in Raipur. Chhattisgarh has won the match by 10 wickets.

The Assam captain emerged as the lone warrior, unleashing a spectacular innings featuring 11 fours and an impressive 12 sixes in just 87 balls, accumulating a total of 155 runs. With this, he gets into the history books for scoring the second fastest century in the history of Ranji Trophy. His 55-ball century is second to Rishabh Pant’s 48-ball ton against Jharkhand in the 2016-17 season.

Notably, Rahul Hazarika contributed the second-highest score for Assam with 39 runs. Parag’s resilient stand proved pivotal as Assam, facing a crumbling lineup and losing wickets at regular intervals, reached a total of 254 runs in the second innings setting a target of 87 runs for Chhattisgarh which they chased down easily without losing a wicket.

In the earlier first innings, Assam struggled against the medium-fast bowling of Sourabh Manjumdar, who secured an impressive five-wicket haul conceding just 41 runs. It was evident the batting lineup lacked quality that Swarupam Purkayastha and Gokul Sharma provided to the team last season.

Consequently, Assam was bowled out for a mere 159 runs after Chhattisgarh had set a formidable total of 327 runs in the Ranji game. Chhattisgarh’s first innings witnessed a standout performance from captain Amandeep Khare, who scored 116 off 218 balls, accompanied by Shashank Singh’s contribution of 82 off 107 balls.

Adding to the cricketing action, Silchar’s Rahul Singh displayed commendable bowling skills, conceding 21 runs in five overs during the second innings. His noteworthy performance continued from the first innings, where he bowled 35 overs, conceding 88 runs while securing two crucial wickets.

Assam faces Kerala in their next Ranji Trophy match which is slated to be held in Guwahati from January 12th to 15th, 2024.
