Robbery in the quarter of Silchar Civil Hospital; Thief caught on CCTV

A strikingly bizarre robbery has taken place in the staff quarter of Civil Hospital in broad daylight with family members in the next room. Dr. Nazreen Mumtaz Barbhuiya, a medical officer who lives with her family in the S.M. Dev Civil Hospital, was robbed by an alleged drug addict and alcoholic, who trespassed into her home and stole her belongings worth thousands. It’s unbelievable to know that, the whole incident had happened in the broad daylight that too while there were people in the next room. The whole incident has been captured in the security cameras.

Yesterday, on the 2nd February at 11:57 AM, the thief entered her lawn and tiptoed inside her personal quarter. He entered a room and stole her personal belongings which included a mobile phone, her handbag which had a huge sum of 60,000 rupees in cash. Along with that, the thief in black t-shirt,stoler important documents and locker keys. The doctors alleged that the thief jumped off her boundary wall and injured himself, but later completed his mission without them even realising from the next room.

Speaking to a media correspondent she said, “The whole home is fortified and he clearly tried to jump over the tin boundary while he hurt himself. There were signs of blood from the injury inside the room. What is shocking is that he could steal with us in the next room. Normal people can’t enter through this fence and the whole incident was caught on the CCTV camera and I’ve produced the footage to the police”.

In her FIR Report filed at the Silchar Sadar Police Station, Dr. Barbhuiya mentioned, “On the DO. 02/02/2022 at 11:58AM culprits entered in the govt quarter and stole away a mobile phone, hand bag including cash approx Rs 60,000/-. With official documents, locker keys from the quarter of complt”. The culprit is yet unidentified, but there are host of other problems related to this theft as the doctor highlighted.

She further added, “there is a huge adda of drug addicts and alcoholics inside the campus. We’ve found many of them in the morning lying unconscious and injected. This happens everyday. I’ve complained repeatedly to the Police and once or twice there was patrolling but it only lasted a few days and then it started all over again. On some nights I return home late after work and I fear for my safety. We must be provided with security so that we can work at peace. These thieves are not normal thieves, they are robbing and stealing just for drugs.”

Security has been a huge issue in almost all the government medical institutes in the state, starting from Dr. Suej Senapati to the attack on nurse Priya Singh recently in Sonabarighat PHC, our government seems to lag behind somewhere in providing security to our healthcare workers. On the other hand, the movement of drugs is at an all time high in the state. Every other day, there’s a drug bust, but probably many others get by the blindspot of the “hawk-eye” or the Police.
