RPF seize 200 more bottles of cough syrup from Silchar-Agartala train; detains a woman

Another success for Railway Police Force as the officials managed to detain 190 bottles of EsKuf cough syrup from a train. With this, the number of seized bottles of cough syrup in the last one month crosses the 1000 mark.

During a routine check-up in 55664 down Silchar – Agartala passenger train, which departs from Silchar Railway station at 8:00 AM, sub-inspector Mithilesh Kumar spotted a suspicious bag in one of the chair car coaches. He asked the lady sitting next to the bag if it was hers to which she responded in affirmative.

“We found 190 bottles of EsKuf cough syrup inside the bag and immediately detained the lady and confiscated the drugs. She said she was accompanied by a man named Raju Miya, but, despite trying our best we could not manage to trace him down,” informs B M Dhar, inspector, RPF.

The detained lady has been identified as 23-year-old Puja Deb Verma, daughter of Ramani Dev Verma a resident of Sutal Mura area, which comes under Bishramganj police station, Sepahijala District in Tripura. She says, “My brother-in-law Raju Miya asked me to accompany him to Silchar for some important work. This is why I came to Silchar yesterday along with him. We spent the night at Silchar Railway station and in the morning he went somewhere and returned with the bag. After that, he escorted me to my seat on the train and went out. I had no clue what was inside the bag. Had I known that he was going to do all this, I would have never joined him.”

44-year-old Raju Miya is a resident of Kalamcherra area located in West Tripura. The RPF officials heard Puja speaking to Raju Miya initially but later he switched off his phone.

The RPF on March 26, 2019, caught smuggler Iqbal Hussein red-handed with cough syrup bottles. Following that, on March 28, 2019, the officials managed to nab another illegal consignment. At around 8:30 that morning, the RPF officials during their routine checking found three bags filled with bottles of EsKuf cough syrup from the same Silchar – Agartala train.

Who are these people smuggling cough syrup from Silchar to Agartala and what is the main reason behind it? Dhar says the RPF is on high alert and trying its best to reach the root of it.
