School student injured in mishap on Mahasadak; road blocked, lathi-charge on local residents
A 10-year-old boy sustained critical injuries after a speeding tipper hit him on Mahasadak near Rampur tea garden in Cachar district on Thursday.
According to sources, the accident took place around 8:30 am this morning when a tipper severely hit Gautam Mura, a school student, from behind on Mahasadak, while he was going to Dolu on a bicycle. Gautam, who was gravely injured, was sent to Borkhola primary health centre. Later he was shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
The tipper driver fled leaving the vehicle after locals tried to chase him down following the mishap. The irate mob thereafter blocked the Mahasadak at Dolu, around 17km from Silchar.
Receiving the information, a team of Borkhola police rushed to the spot; however, the situation started worsening as hours passed with local residents going berserk and refusing to release the route despite repeated requests by police.
Eventually, Cachar additional superintendent of police Rakesh Reddy along with CRPF jawans reached there and tried to pacify the protesters. The situation was then somewhat brought under control. But, things turned tumultuous soon after some protesters engaged in a verbal duel with a local woman.
This led to chaotic scenes on the road following which police resorted to baton-charge to disperse the mob and mollify the situation. In response, the enraged protesters pelted stones on police owing to which few officials and CRPF jawans were injured. The spot became empty soon after the pelting of stones, sources said.
Borkhola MLA Kishore Nath reached the spot after the incident and took stock of the situation. He met the injured boy’s family and assured them financial help.
Four persons were detained in connection with the stone-pelting incident. They were under interrogation, as per last available reports.
