SEBA withdraws affiliation of 105 schools with poor performance in HSLC exams, 5 from Barak Valley
The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) has taken a strong decision to withdraw its affiliation from 105 private and venture schools in the state with effect from March 31, 2023. This move comes after a scrutiny of the results of the HSLC/AHM examination in 2022, which revealed that these schools had dismal performances, with pass percentages ranging from 0-10 only.
Out of the 294 schools that showed poor performance, 41 had consistently bad results for the preceding five years. Show cause notices were issued to all these schools in June and July 2022, asking them to explain why their affiliation to SEBA should not be cancelled. However, 107 schools did not respond to the notices.
For the 187 schools that replied to the notices, SEBA scrutinized their responses and decided to give them one more chance to improve their results in the HSLC exam 2023.
However, for the remaining 105 schools listed as Annexure-1, which did not respond to the show cause notice, SEBA has assumed that the school authorities have no interest in improving their results. The poor results of these schools were found to be affecting the overall pass percentage of the state and the district concerned negatively. Therefore, SEBA has decided to withdraw its affiliation from these schools with effect from March 31, 2023.
Further details reveal that of the 105 schools that SEBA has withdrawn its affiliation from, 5 are from Barak Valley including three schools from Cachar district – Dewan Group High School, Doloo Bagan High School, and JRD Public High School, one from Hailakandi district – Nirod Behari Paul High School and one from Karimganj district – Vidyarthi Bhawan High School.
As a result, these schools will not be able to register any student of Class IX from April 1, 2023. This decision is expected to serve as a wake-up call to all schools across the state to take their responsibility towards providing quality education seriously, and ensure that they take necessary steps to improve their performance.
