Severe Heatwave Grips Barak: Katigorah’s Janata High School students faint during class
The intense heatwave in Silchar reached a sweltering 36 degrees Celsius today, with the heat index making it feel like 41 degrees. This extreme weather condition has severely impacted the local population, particularly school-going children.
In Katigorah, the oppressive heat took a toll on the students of Janata High School. Several students fell ill this afternoon, with some even fainting inside the classrooms. The alarming situation prompted immediate action from the school’s staff, who rushed the affected students to the nearest hospital in Katigorah for treatment. The students are currently receiving medical care, and their conditions are being closely monitored.
The heatwave’s impact has been felt across the region. Just yesterday, a teacher from Kalain’s Satya Ranjan College tragically succumbed to heatstroke after finishing his duties at the college. This incident underscores the severe health risks posed by the current weather conditions.
Concern rises about the ongoing heatwave and its effects on vulnerable populations, especially children and the elderly. As the heatwave shows no sign of abating, it is necessary to take precautionary measures, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours. Even though some parts of Barak Valley witnessed rainfall today, satellite data availed from the Zoom Earth of IMD doesn’t show chances of rainfall over the valley. Regional Met Centre in Guwahati forecasts chances of a wet spell from May 22.
