Shamol Da and RD Roy brings back "Tumar maai amare bala pain na" with a new twist

If you are a 90s kid and Sylheti, then you have definitely banged your head listening to the Sylheti rap Tumar Maai Amare Bala Pain Na. Much before the YoYo revolution started in India or Akon got popularity in the Northeastern region, this song mesmerised Bengalis, especially the Sylhetis.

Hrijoy Das Kanungo popularly known as Shamol Da, and RD Roy made a remake of this popular number with some new lyrics and released it today on their social media platforms. So far, the song has been well appreciated in social media platforms.

The music video starts with Shamol Da in his typical funny avatar making a call to Fatik’s mother who accuses him of spoiling her son’s (Fatik’s) nature. RD Roy enters the frame and the recreation starts. In the beginning, they retained the essence of the original version in both lyrics and music with a subtle blend of freshness.

The second half of the song is where they curve in their own lyrics and experiment with the tune, “Making a remake is tougher for me compared to creating my own song,” says Hrijoy Das Kanungo. “In a remake, you have to abide by certain restrictions and there are limitations when it comes to freedom to experiment which makes it tough. While doing my own music I can play with the moods, if something doesn’t suit, I can move to a different mood,” he adds.

The team had three days to execute the difficult task. Subhajit Das, who works as a cinematographer in Mumbai had returned back home in Silchar for a holiday. While there, he wanted to create something and that’s when he dialed Hrijoy. “I suggested to him why don’t you speak to RD Roy too. RD started the rap culture in Silchar and they both know each other well too. That’s how we all got together. It was RD’s idea to remake this song,” recalls Hrijoy.

“Subhajit had to go back to Mumbai in three days, so we shot the entire piece in two days and the audio was recorded in a day. I wrote the lyrics in my part and RD penned his stanzas,” Hrijoy informs.

RD returned to Mumbai and started the post-production. The song might be a blast from the past, but the cinematography very much lives up to today’s lifestyle. The cinematographer used Facebook live, selfie cameras and other modern traits making the overall project an interesting one.

Well, after listening to this piece and watching it, one would definitely want Subhajit to visit Silchar more often and for a longer period of time. On the other hand, after Anupam Roy interview and Tumar Maai Bala Pai Naa, Hrijoy has raised the bar of expectation. Overall the digital space in Silchar is going through some interesting period of time…
