Silchar airport gets upgraded Apron, parking bays; Authority performs 'Bhoomi Pujan'

The Extension of Apron and Construction of New Link Taxiway at Civil Enclave of Silchar Airport had started on August 18, 2020. The awarded cost of the project is Rs.14.90 crores. Subsequently, the construction of New Parking Bays 5 and 6 got completed in December 2020 and the link taxiway work is still under progress.

The work on Old Parking Bays 3 and 4 have also started on January 15, 2021 and the entire work, including the link taxiway, was completed within a period of seven months on August 14, 2021, informed the authority.

In a press statement Arnab Kumar Das, AAI it is mentioned that the old Apron, Parking bays 3 & 4 has been upgraded to the concrete surface with new Taxi light, Apron edge light & associated facilities. The Apron has become ready in all respect for Aircraft parking & operations.

“On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the ceremonial Bhoomi poojan of the upgraded portion of the Apron, parking bay 3 & 4 was done today on August 17. This Apron will now be used for Aircraft parking & operations w.e.f 18.08.21, which is exactly One Year after the Apron work started,” stated the press statement.

The old Apron, Parking bays 1 & 2 along with the link taxiway is now handed over for the up-gradation work.

“The entire project is scheduled to get completed by 17.02.2022. After completion of the project, Silchar Airport is going to add Two more parking bays in addition to the existing 04 parking bays. The 06 parking bays would be able to cater to 03 Boeing 737-900/ Airbus 321 type Aircraft and 03 ATR-72 / Bombardier Q-400 type Aircraft simultaneously,” informed the Silchar Airport Authority.

Terminal Building expansion & modernisation work is also going on simultaneously and after completion of that project, Silchar Airport is going to have 04 boarding gates, 03 or 04 frisking booths and 02 X-ray machines for faster passenger frisking.

“With these infrastructures in place, Silchar Airport is getting ready to handle more flights and passengers simultaneously. The inconveniences caused, if any, to passengers in this phase is extremely regretted,” opined the authority.
