Silchar Bypass Case: SSP Urges Public Not to Share Unverified Claims; One Arrested, More Detentions to Follow
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Cachar, Partha Pratim Das, has urged the public to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified information regarding the alleged gang rape case reported on the Silchar Bypass on February 19, stating that the investigation is ongoing and the final medical report is still awaited.
Addressing the media, SSP Das confirmed that a case has been registered and one accused has been arrested, while another suspect is expected to be detained soon. “We are looking at this case from all angles, including extortion and rape, and any other possible aspects. Till the investigation is clear, I request the public to stay calm and not panic,” he said. He added that the medical report from Silchar Medical College and Hospital is pending and that police will issue an official statement after the probe is complete.
The case stems from an FIR alleging that seven men sexually assaulted a woman on February 19 while holding her partner hostage at knifepoint on the Silchar Bypass. The report alleged that the assailants arrived in an SUV, assaulted the couple and raped the woman one by one.
Cachar Police have arrested 25-year-old Nilotpal Das of Tapoban Nagar, Silchar, after the victim identified him from a photograph. Police sources said the accused admitted being present at the scene and alleged that he and others targeted couples in parked vehicles to extort money. According to investigators, Rs 10,000 was transferred via UPI during the incident. The accused denied committing rape or witnessing any such act.
Following the reports, social media platforms were flooded with posts demanding justice for the victim, while various claims and interpretations of the alleged incident circulated widely. Amid the growing online discourse, Cachar Police appealed to the public not to share or amplify unverified information, stressing that the case remains under investigation and that premature conclusions could lead to misinformation and panic.
In response to the social media activity and public concern, an NGO, Sampriti, submitted a memorandum to the authorities seeking an official clarification on the alleged gang rape reported on the Silchar Bypass. The organisation cited widespread anxiety among residents due to circulating reports and urged Cachar Police to confirm or deny the occurrence and provide transparent updates on the investigation. The memorandum also called for swift action against those responsible if the allegations are established, while expressing confidence in the police to maintain law and order and ensure justice.
The Silchar District Mahila Congress also demanded justice for the survivor of the alleged bypass incident and urged authorities to carry out a thorough and impartial probe to establish the facts. The women’s wing emphasised that accountability must be ensured and that the survivor’s rights, dignity and confidentiality should be protected throughout the investigative and legal process.
