Silchar Celebrates 76th Republic Day with Grandeur and Patriotism

Silchar joined the nation in celebrating the 76th Republic Day with fervour and grandeur. The event, organised by the Cachar District Administration, was held at the Police Parade Ground, where Minister Kaushik Rai unfurled the National Flag, followed by a ceremonial parade and cultural performances.

The celebrations commenced with the unfurling of the Tricolour by Minister Kaushik Rai, as everyone present stood to attention and offered a solemn salute to honour the national symbol. District Commissioner Mridul Yadav and Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta graced the occasion alongside a large gathering of officials, dignitaries, and the general public.

One moment that caught everyone’s attention during the celebrations was the singing of the National Anthem twice. The first rendition took place right after the unfurling of the National Flag, as per tradition, but it was followed by another unexpected performance shortly after by a different group. The reason behind the National Anthem being sung twice remained unclear, leaving many in the audience curious and puzzled.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Kaushik Rai lauded the government for its various initiatives aimed at strengthening democracy and governance. He emphasised that without an independent and robust judicial system, democracy has no real meaning. Highlighting recent advancements, he informed the audience about the implementation of e-filing which aims to make legal services more accessible. This initiative enables citizens to file cases online, pay court fees digitally, and access virtual court services with ease.

The minister also appreciated the efforts of the state government in upgrading Gurucharan College, Silchar, to a State University. He assured the public that the selection process for appointing a Vice-Chancellor is underway and would be completed soon.

The parade, a key feature of the event, witnessed the participation of 29 contingents, including the 6th Assam Police Battalion, Assam Home Guards (Cachar), CRPF, BSF, and various scout groups from schools across the district. Each platoon marched with precision and discipline, evoking a sense of pride among the spectators.

Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 to mark the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, which established India as a sovereign and democratic republic. This day reminds us of the values enshrined in the Constitution—justice, equality, and liberty. It is a time to reflect on our duties as citizens and work collectively towards a prosperous and inclusive future for the nation.
