Silchar Dental College hostel rusticates 14 students on ragging complaint, allowed to carry academics

14 students of the Government Dental College of Silchar have been rusticated after a complaint of ragging was filed by a first-year student. This incident took place on December 1, when a first-year student of the college was allegedly ragged by his seniors in the Boy’s Hostel. The victim filed a complaint with the Anti-Ragging National Helpline, which then contacted the college administration along with the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar. After a committee was formed by the DC headed by a magistrate, 14 students were rusticated from the hostel following the enquiry yesterday.

On December 1, when a first-year student was ragged by his third and fifth-year seniors, he filed a complaint with the National Anti-Ragging Helpline. The Anti-Ragging Helpline informed about this complaint to the Principal of the College along with the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar. The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar formed an anti-ragging enquiry team with Magistrate Kishan Chorei as its head.

Based on the enquiry team’s report, 14 students of the college have been rusticated from the hostel of the college, while they are being allowed to continue their academics. Speaking about this incident, the College Principal Manjula Das said, “I got an email from the Anti-Ragging helpline of the Government of India which mentioned that a student of the first year was ragged. It also mentioned the types of ragging the student went through along with the names of some of the students who were involved. I instantly called the anti-ragging squad of the college for a meeting to start a preliminary investigation following the guidelines in place”.

About the action taken by the college authority, the Principal said, “The squad conducted the enquiry and took statements of the victim, those names mentioned in the email and others in the hostel. Following the recommendation of the squad, we have rusticated these 14 students from the college hostel. The enquiry team found there has been no physical abuse and it was limited to abusive language and harassment so we took the minimum action as of now”. This incident comes at a time when the wounds of the Dibrugarh University ragging case are still fresh.
