Silchar Municipality Board elections; 14 wards reserved for women, SC - 4

A meeting with all political parties was held at the conference hall of the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Thursday in connection with the reservation of wards under Silchar Municipality Board for the conduct of Municipality election 2020.

The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner Cachar Barnali Sharma. At the outset, Deputy Commissioner Cachar welcomed the members in the meeting. Initiating the discussion, Assistant Commissioner Abhilash Barnawal, Cachar presented the population data pertaining to the Silchar Municipality Board area based on Population census 2011.

After a threadbare discussion and with relevant notification issued from the Urban Development Department it was informed that the percentage of SC population in Silchar Municipality area is 15.33 per cent so proportionate number of seats to be reserved for SCs comes to 4seats, ward number 14,17,20,25 having the highest SC population in descending order, these 4wards are reserved for SCs for the ensuing Municipality election out of which Ward number 14 and 20 are reserved for SC women by draw of lots in front of all political parties.

It was also informed that the percentage of ST population in the Silchar Municipality jurisdiction is less than 0.5 per cent and hence no seat is required to be reserved for STs. Fifty per cent of total of 28 nos of seats are to be reserved for women which include the ward reserved for SC women. Wards number 14 and 20 are already reserved for SC women and the remaining 12nos of wards i,e ward number 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, 16, 18, 22, 23, 26 and 28 are reserved for women (general) by rotation.

Ward numbers 1, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13,15,19, 21, 24, 27 are kept unreserved and ward numbers 17 and 25 are only SC candidates.
