Silchar–Sairang Passenger Train To Be Flagged Off On February 9; Ashwini Vaishnaw To Join Via VC

A new chapter in rail connectivity for the Barak Valley and Mizoram is set to begin with the flag-off of the Silchar–Sairang passenger train on February 9, 2026. This development was shared by Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha on social media.

The flag-off ceremony will be held at Sairang Railway Station in Mizoram, while the Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, will join the event through video conferencing at 12 noon.

The development follows a recent request made by Kanad Purkayastha, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Assam, who had urged the Ministry for early operationalisation of the Silchar–Sairang rail service. Expressing happiness over the development, Purkayastha said he was “extremely happy” that the train was being flagged off shortly after his request and conveyed his sincere gratitude to the Union Railway Minister for what he described as a “valuable gift” to the region.

As per the letter issued by the Divisional Railway Manager, Lumding Division, the new passenger service will connect Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, with the Barak Valley of Assam, significantly improving inter-state rail connectivity and benefiting passengers, traders, students, and daily commuters.

In addition to the train service, Blended Hospitality Services—including sleeping pods, a modern air-conditioned lounge, and a multi-cuisine restaurant—will also be inaugurated at Guwahati Railway Station on the same day, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and convenience.

The ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 PM on February 9, and is being seen as a landmark moment in strengthening rail infrastructure and regional integration in the North-East.
