Silchar's Debashree Sarkar bags Silver at Auckland Powerlifting Commonwealth: Journey to podium wasn't easy
This is a moment of immense pride for Silchar. Debashree Sarkar has won the Silver Medel in the Auckland Powerlifting Commonwealth Championship. Donning the Indian jersey, Silchar’s Debashree has secured this great stride for the country. She was the only powerlifter from Assam to represent India in this championship held in Auckland, New Zealand.
Debashree alias Sona won the medal for the country in the “Commonwealth Classic and Equipped Commonwealth Powerlifting and Bench Press Championship” held in Auckland city in the junior 52 kg event on Thursday. Hundreds of athletes have participated in this championship from the country, but from Assam, she is the sole representative. This was the first international tournament for Debashree, where she donned the jersey of India and represented the nation.
Even though she got a chance on the national team, but financial constraints were a hurdle on her way. This year in July, she participated in the national championship held at Telegana and showed her brilliance. In that championship, she won the Bronze medal and secured her place in the national team and the international platform. After crossing all the hurdles, this girl from Purno Paul Road in Bilpar bore all the expenses of representing the country in Auckland’s championship.
Debashree hails from a very humble background and that is why her fight to this height was quite a challenge. The introduction to powerlifting for this Silver Medel winner was five years back through Jatiya Byam Vidyalaya, Silchar. Later she went to Guwahati to continue her practice three years back. Her medel has not brought pride to the town but the whole country.
