SMCH Road Partially Closed From Today For Major Infrastructure Upgrade near Polytechnic
In a major step towards improving Silchar’s urban infrastructure, authorities have announced the partial closure of the SMCH Road near Silchar Polytechnic from May 20, 2025. The closure, effective until further notice, will restrict vehicular movement on half the width of the road to facilitate critical upgradation work.
The project, undertaken under the Mukhya Mantrir Unnoto Pakipath Nirman Aachani (MMUPPNA) and funded by NABARD’s RIDF-XXX scheme for the financial year 2024–25, includes comprehensive improvements to the road stretch between Rangirkhari Netaji Statue Point and SMCH Point.
Key components of the development work involve road surface enhancement, construction of a box culvert, and the installation of an RCC-covered drainage system, aiming to ensure smoother connectivity, increased safety, and better water management.
Acknowledging the potential inconvenience to the public, the administration has urged citizens to cooperate and exercise patience during the period of construction. “We regret the disruption but assure that the long-term benefits of this upgrade will significantly improve traffic flow and infrastructure resilience,” said Assistant Executive Engineer S.U. Barbhuiya of the PWRD, Silchar Territorial Road Sub-Division.
The press release was issued by the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Silchar, Assam.
