Sonai: Husband Hacks Wife to Death Six Months into Marriage; Arrested

In a gruesome murder in East Sonai, a husband has allegedly hacked his wife to death with an axe, just 6 months after their marriage. As per the neighbours, the incident that occurred around 5 PM on Sunday (August 3) at Gobindonagar Part 1 in Sonai, Cachar has stemmed from a domestic quarrel.

Police sources said 28-year-old Suraj Das, following a heated domestic quarrel, allegedly struck his wife, Rituparna Das on the head with an axe. The 19-year-old collapsed on the ground, bleeding profusely. Family members rushed to the spot upon hearing her screams, but she had already succumbed to her injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that after committing the crime, Suraj walked out of the house calmly and was strolling along the village road without fear when locals apprehended him and alerted the police. A team from Sonai Police arrived promptly, arrested Suraj, and sent Rituparna’s body to Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) for post-mortem examination.

Hospital sources confirmed that Rituparna was brought to the casualty ward by her in-laws and was declared dead on arrival at 7:40 PM. “The dead body has been handed over to the police for autopsy,” SMCH sources said.

Family members revealed that Suraj and Rituparna had been married only six months ago. Rituparna, daughter of Kajol Das of Mohankhal in Amraghat, was reportedly embroiled in frequent quarrels with her husband since the wedding. Police have started interrogating Suraj to ascertain the motive behind the murder.
