Special Weather Bulletin: IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall to continue in Assam, Meghalaya

The Regional Meteorological Department, Guwahati of the Indian Meteorological Department issued another “Special Weather Bulletin” on April 15 forecasting light to moderate rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya on April 15 and 16. The previous bulletin forecasted light to moderate rainfall over these states up to April 15 only, but now it has extended up to April 17. The reason behind this heavy rainfall now is the moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India due to Strong low-level Southerly or Southwesterly winds is very likely to continue from April 15 to 17 2022. Due to this torrential rainfall, the road connectivity between Silchar and Guwahati via Meghalaya has been severely damaged causing long queues of buses and trucks.

The Special Weather Bulletin has forecasted light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. Chances of thunderstorms and Lightning at isolated Places with gusty winds of 40-50 Kmph are also there. These conditions might persist over Assam and Meghalaya, from April 15 to 17. The IMD has raised the “Orange” warning for Assam, which means “Alert and is prepared”. However, by April 18 and 19, the intensity of the rainfall might reduce and for these two days, IMD has raised the “Green” sign, which means, no warning or action is needed.

According to the “Mausam” portal of the IMD, there are chances of heavy rainfall in Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. In Cachar, there are chances of heavy rainfall of 18, 17 and 21 mm on April 15, 16 and 17 respectively. Humidity will also be high on these days in the district. In Hailakandi, from April 15 to 17, the rainfall level will be 14, 12 and 34mm on the three days. The Humidity will remain high as well. In Karimganj too the rainfall shows a similar pattern according to the forecast. The highest rainfall of 31mm is forecasted on April 17. On April 15 and 16, the rainfall level is forecasted to be 15mm and 20mm respectively.

Last night’s torrential rainfall has raised the water level of Barak and its tributaries. Many low-lying areas and fields of Katigorah, Kalain and other areas have also submerged due to last night’s heavy rainfall.
