SR Row: Sushmita Dev Files FIR Against Mohan Lal Das Over Multiple Form 7 Objections Against Masughat Voters
Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev on Saturday (January 24) filed an FIR at the office of the Superintendent of Police, Cachar, alleging deliberate attempts to delete the names of genuine voters from the electoral roll in Masughat under the Borkhola Legislative Assembly Constituency.
Dev submitted a written complaint to SSP Cachar Partha Protim Das, seeking action under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, against Mohan Lal Das, who is accused of filing multiple Form 7 objections during the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls in Assam.
Speaking to the media outside the SP office, Dev said residents of Masughat had been “moving from police station to police station” but were confused about the proper procedure to pursue their grievance. She alleged that a single individual had filed 22 Form 7 applications seeking the deletion of voters who had participated in both Panchayat and Lok Sabha elections and have been long-term residents of the area.
“They are genuine voters of Masughat. Still, their names are being targeted. That is why I have filed this FIR,” Dev said.
The MP further alleged that she overheard the accused speaking over the phone and claiming that he acted on the instructions of the district BJP office. She alleged that such actions were aimed at harassing genuine voters ahead of elections. The BJP had not issued any response to the allegation at the time of filing this report.
Dev also warned voters whose names appear in the draft electoral roll not to assume they are safe. She advised them to immediately contact their Booth Level Officers, verify whether any objections have been filed against their names, and attend hearings with relevant documents. She cautioned that failure to attend hearings could result in the deletion of names, forcing affected voters to seek legal remedies, possibly after elections are over.
Earlier, in a letter dated January 23, Dev had written to the Election Commission of India, alleging that the Special Revision process was hurried and poorly coordinated, increasing the risk of wrongful deletion of genuine voters. She pointed out that objections were filed in bulk after publication of the draft electoral roll on December 27, 2025. The objection window closed on January 22, 2026, hearings are scheduled to conclude by February 2, and the final electoral roll is to be published on February 10.
The issue surfaced after more than 20 residents of Masughat alleged that false objections were filed showing them as “absent” or “permanently shifted”. A Booth Level Officer reportedly conducted door-to-door verification on January 21 following the objections. Residents maintained that they have been living continuously at their addresses and termed the objections baseless.
Affected voters alleged that multiple Form 7 applications were filed on the same day against several families, causing inconvenience and anxiety. They have submitted written complaints alleging that the exercise amounts to an attempt to deprive them of their right to vote.
