Sribhumi: Head Teacher Caught Red-Handed Accepting Bribe by Vigilance Team
In a decisive operation, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, arrested Sushanta Nath, Head Teacher of 1148 Azad LP School, Bagirkhola, located in the Nilambazar area of Sribhumi district, for accepting a bribe. Nath was caught red-handed on Wednesday near the immersion ghat at Kalibari Road, on the banks of the Kushiyara River.
Acting on a tip-off, the vigilance team conducted a planned operation on December 11 to apprehend Nath. The bribe, intended to expedite the complainant’s promotion under the Modified Assured Career Progression Scheme (MACPS) work, was laced with a special chemical to ensure evidence of the act. This afternoon, Nath was caught accepting the tampered currency from a fellow employee of the Assam education department.
The MACPS provides financial upgrades to eligible government employees who miss out on promotions due to a lack of vacant posts, ensuring at least three career advancements. Nath’s demand for an undisclosed amount in bribe to process this entitlement led to the vigilance team’s intervention.
After his arrest, Nath was taken to the Sadar police station in Sribhumi town, where an interrogation is underway. Authorities emphasised that the operation reflects the government’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
