Stagnant Water Condition Sparks "Election Boycott" Threat in Silchar's Chirukandi

“We are going to boycott the election,” declares a resident of Silchar, speaking out against the authorities’ negligence. The statement came from a citizen residing in the Chirukandi area of Silchar. In Chirukandi’s Debgram, Kalibari Road, stagnant water has plagued the community for the past 10 days. This issue has persisted for a decade, with no action taken by authorities to alleviate the situation.

For the past 10 years, residents have coped with stagnant water by cutting roads to allow water passage. However, this year, that solution is not feasible. As a result, numerous families find themselves submerged in water, while others are completely surrounded. This impediment disrupts their daily lives, making tasks like attending school or seeking medical care challenging.

Adding to their woes, the area is experiencing a power outage, creating more trouble for the locals. Residents fear that this year’s inundation may last longer than previous years, potentially persisting throughout the year.

The water originates from across town and accumulates in their area, creating problems for residents. Despite seeking help from Silchar’s MLA, Dipayan Chakraborty, promises to address the issue remain unfulfilled.

Residents demand that all election candidates visit their location, witness the problem firsthand, and resolve it before the election. Failure to do so will result in a boycott. With approximately 100 families affected, more may suffer if action is not taken promptly. They question the utility of casting votes when their concerns remain unaddressed.

Furthermore, they urge Assam’s Chief Minister, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, to intervene and provide assistance. Proper drainage is requested to mitigate the issue, as residents fear being trapped in water indefinitely without intervention.
