Stolen goods, drugs, thieves; Police busts racket in Tarapur

A few days back, a video went viral on social media which shows a youth walking into an electronic appliances store in Tarapur and breaking its CCTV camera. The incident took place on October 12, 2019, at the Assamese Basti. While the miscreant was cutting wires that kept the CCTV cameras on, one of the installed devices captured a clear image of his face. The video with the miscreant’s face clearly visible went viral on social media and the netizens started searching for the young-age-man.

On October 16, 2019 he was spotted in the Assamese Basti area and the locals confronted him. Locals lost their cool and started manhandling him. One of the police officials also got incurred injuries during the confrontation. Late that night, Police managed to bring the situation under control. Deep Nag and Arghya Chakraborty were arrested.

Deep Nag while speaking to the press admitted that he along with the help of Raju had stolen more than 20 mobile phones from the store. He said Raju is missing now while Amar and Bappan were also part of the crime. Nag after admitting he robbed the store said that this was the first time he had robbed a store. However, locals allege that he is a serial offender and has robbed stores and houses recently too.

Nag spilled more beans. He said that the residence of Arghya Chakraborty was where they operated from. He also mentioned that the entire group used to spend most of their time at Chakraborty’s house in Tarapur. “We used to drink, dope there at his house. Even that night after stealing the mobile phones we went to his house and had an outing. All the stolen goods are also kept there at his place,” said Nag.

He added that Arghya Chakraborty had asked all of them to run away to a different state after the photos went viral and that is why others are missing. Locals alleged that Chakraborty’s residence has always been used for anti-social activities. One of the neighbours said, “A while back he had trafficked a few sex workers and was running a business from his home. However, that got discontinued after the locals confronted him and now all this is going on.”

Arghya Chakraborty, on the other hand, denied all the allegations against him and said Deep Nag is saying all this to defame him. Pleading innocence, Chakraborty said he has no relation with Deep Nag. “He was a tenant in our colony. A few months back he robed a house and was beaten out of the area. Now he is saying all this as an act of revenge. I request the Police officials to visit my place and investigate properly,” he said.

Another accused in the case, Amar is an autorickshaw driver in Silchar and also works as a cook at Arghya Chakraborty’s residence. Nag in his statement to Police said that the bag with all the stolen goods is kept at Arghya Chakraborty’s house. Police went to Chakraborty’s residence and found a bag.

As per the latest report Police managed to nab Amar and Raju and along with them, Arghya Chakraborty and Deep Nag are all at Tarapur Police Outpost.
