Sushmita Dev Condemns Alleged Misogyny in BJP Minister's "Thumka" Remarks on Mamata Banerjee

A recently surfaced viral video allegedly captures BJP Minister Giriraj Singh making disparaging comments about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Singh reportedly uttered, “Jashn mana rahi hai, thumke laga rahi hai, yeh uchit nahi hai.”

This video, initially shared by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on the social media platform formerly known as “X” (previously “Twitter”), sparked widespread debate and criticism, with several politicians condemning the remarks as misogynistic.

In response to the video, Trinamool Congress leader, Silchar’s Sushmita Dev released a statement via her social media handle addressing the issue. She emphasized Mamata Banerjee’s triumphant victories in the West Bengal elections and the subsequent defeats faced by the BJP. Dev highlighted the BJP Minister’s apparent inability to accept these defeats and suggested that his derogatory comments stemmed from this resentment. Additionally, Dev referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s usage of “Didi o didi” during his Bengal visit in relation to the CM.

Sushmita Dev further expressed her concern regarding the BJP Minister’s perspective on women, insinuating his discomfort at a woman consistently outshining his party. Despite BJP’s vocal stance on women’s safety, Dev pointed out Kolkata’s reputation as the safest city in India.

Amid the intensifying debate, Minister Giriraj Singh refuted allegations of making misogynistic remarks. Speaking to the media, he clarified that his statement was directed at a Chief Minister and not intended as an affront to any female leader.

In a video statement, Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev affirmed that just as BJP faced defeat at the hands of the Trinamool Congress in past West Bengal elections, they would continue to meet the same fate in the future. She pledged a resolute response to Singh’s alleged derogatory remarks in the upcoming 2024 elections.
