Sushmita Dev distributes sweets, fruits in detention camp; takes a dig at the government

Bijoya Dashsami for Bengalis all around the world mean hugging friends, seeking blessings from elders and spend lovely time with the young ones. None of that is possible for the ones kept locked inside the detention camp in Silchar which is a section in the Central Jail. In that detention camps there are detainees who have been either convicted as a foreigner or the ones who are still waiting for their appeal to be heard by the foreigners tribunal.

Mahila Congress’ National President and former Silchar MP, Sushmita Dev decided to spend an afternoon in the detention camp. She walked in with bags full of fruits and sweets and distributed it among the detainees. “We celebrate Bijoya Dashami with our family members, neighbours but these people inside the camp cannot do that. That is why I thought I would come and wish them Subho Bijoya by distributing some fruits and sweets,” said Dev after stepping out of the jail.

She said it is sad that the ones who are claiming that they would solve this problem, who are saying that NRC is not acceptable are actually not standing by the ones in the detention camp. “We have seen that Himanta Biswa Sarma was in Silchar during Durga Puja and visited around 40 – 45 Puja Pandals. I am really glad that he paid a visit, everybody is welcome in Silchar. But I think he should have visited the detention camp as that would have encouraged the ones arrested inside the camp,” she added.

Dev said that she has assured the detainees her support, “I told them if there is anything that we could do from my side we will be there to do that,” added Dev.
