Sushmita Dev must clarify her stand on Citizenship Amendment Bill before seeking votes: Rajdeep Roy

BJP’s candidate Dr. Rajdeep Roy was campaigning in Katigorah yesterday. While addressing the voters gathered to listen to him, Roy took a jibe at Congress candidate and Silchar MP Sushmita Dev. He said Congress has made it clear that they will throw the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 in the Bramhaputra river if they are elected to power in the upcoming general elections to Lok Sabha.

Roy mentioned that the Congress leaders who are traveling to Assam for campaigning have said it time and again that the party will not endorse the bill. “In such a scenario Sushmita Dev must clarify her stance on Citizenship Amendment Bill before seeking votes from Bengalis living in Barak Valley,” he said.

Criticising MP’s walk out from the Parliament and accusing her of hypocrisy, Roy said, “The MP was given an opportunity to speak on the floor of the Parliament about the plight of Bengali Citizens of Barak Valley. Instead, she mischievously evaded the scenario and walked out from the back door. The whole Barak Valley was waiting for her to speak as this was the first time in 70 years an MP from Silchar was given the opportunity to speak on the issue of Citizenship, but she decided to play it down.”

The contesting candidate also an orthopedic surgeon, standing in Katigorah, said that he shared a special bond with the place, “I myself belong to the family of a Bengali immigrant. During partition, my grandfather rode a bullock cart and reached Katirail with my father who back then was very young. Our family resided in Katirail for a brief period of time before shifting to Silchar,” he concluded.
