Sushmita Dev voices concern over the custodial death of a Cachar resident in Mizoram, attack on teacher in the name of "religious adventurism"
Member of Parliament from All India Trinamool Congress, Sushmita Dev who is the former Silchar MP, has met the Superintendent of Police Cachar, Dr. Ramandeep Kaur and voiced her concern over a slew of activities that are occurring in various parts of the district. Dev has submitted a letter to the SP, where she mentions specific incidents while sharing her concern over the general law and order situation.
Dev writes in her letter, “I, on behalf of All India Trinamool Congress, Cachar District, would like to draw the attention of the District Administration following the deteriorating law and order situation in the district of Cachar, particularly in the rural areas.”
She backs her observation, “The increasing number of daring dacoity, theft, kidnapping for extortion of money and the unlawfully demand of ransom has become routine affairs in the district which is a matter of great concern. Snatching of cash in broad daylight in front of different Banks in the close proximity of Silchar town is another example of the deteriorating law and order situation in the district.”
Sushmita Dev, also mentions one of the most controversial incidents of recent times, in her letter. She writes, “It is of grave concern when recently Silchar witnessed one such unfortunate incident where a Retired Teacher with his accompanying wife and kids, was manhandled in the name of religious adventurism, even his car was also broken. Cachar will like to see an unbiased, uncompromised and fearless Administration, act in the interest of the people and in return, the people of Cachar will respect them as their saviour.”
It is worth mentioning here that Cachar Police arrested five Bajrang Dal members on the same night for attacking the teacher and snatching his beard. The retired teacher was racially abused and he went on and lodged an FIR. However, the Bajrang Dal and the VHP on the other hand, accused Cachar Police of violating human rights of the five arrested as they were allegedly “beaten mercilessly” and “offered urine” instead of water.
Back to MP Dev’s letter, she concludes, “The death of persons from Cachar in Mizoram especially in Police custody is also alarming and needs appropriate action. All India Trinamool Congress, Cachar District strongly believes that the District Administration will rise to the occasion and will definitely restore and set the law and order situation of the district right.”
