Suspected Brown Sugar worth Rs 10 crore seized from Badarpur, 1 detained; "WagonR was driving from Silchar to Karimganj," Police

In one of the massive successes in recent time, Assam Police officials deployed in check gate at Badarpur has managed to seize a huge consignment of abusive substances.

Karimganj Police’s Kamalesh Singh informed that a Maruti Suzuki WagonR was driving from Silchar towards Karimganj earlier today and was stopped at the check gate for routine security check.

“When we asked the driver to open the boot of the car, he hesitated. But eventually he opened it. While everything looked normal inside the car, the driver’s body language was suspicious. After further checking we found out there is a customised secret chamber inside the boot,” informed Singh.

After the secret chamber built beneath the spare tyre tray in the boot, was opened, several small packets were visible. They were not one or two, the consignment weighed more than 1,131 grams. “These are packets of suspected brown sugar and the market value is estimated to be upwards of Rs 10 crore,” said Kamalesh Singh.

The driver confessed that the car was loaded in Dimapur and he drove to Silchar. He added that he was on his way to Karimganj. “We are suspecting that this consignment was headed to Bangladesh via Agartala. The Police will investigate the matter to find out who all are involved in this huge smuggling,” added Singh.

The driver detained is a resident of Karimganj’s Patherkandi area.
