Temple priest found dead at Palonghat

The dead body of a man was recovered under mysterious circumstances from his house at Palonghat in Cachar district on Saturday.

The deceased Sandip Sharma (alias Nidhu) was a pujari (Hindu priest) at Palonghat Satsang Ashram. According to sources, Sandip was found hanging at his house at Palonghat market area, around 28km from Silchar, on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking about the incident, Bijoya, wife of Sandip, said they originally belong from Jamalpar. Her husband Sandip was the pujari at Palonghat Satsang Ashram for the past three years and they had been staying at the rented house (from which the body was found) at Palonghat since then, she said.

She said Sandip came to Palonghat on Friday night while she stayed back at Jamalpar. On Saturday morning, she phoned Sandip a number of times, but the calls went unanswered. Around 1pm this afternoon, she reached the house (at Palonghat) and found Sandip hanging from the ceiling of the house.

Palonghat gaon panchayat president Shashanka Seal along with Bijoya went to the local police outpost and informed about the incident. A team of police officials thereafter reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.
