"The virus has become more powerful," Bhaskar Gupta; Administration prepares two more Hospitals
“Due to some generic changes the virus has become more powerful and is now superseding the immunity level due to which it has become more fatal,” said Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice-principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital. This is why, he said, it has become imperative for the administration to increase the capacity of beds in Silchar.
Meanwhile, the district health department informed that it will convert the Foreigners Tribunal office in Bahadurpur, Rongpur, near clock tower into a 100 bed COVID care centre. Additionally, Chibitabichia Model Hospital will also be a COVID Care Centre with immediate effect increasing the capacity by 120 beds. After that, if the administration finds the need, it will convert NATRIP into a makeshift hospital which will also work a COVID Care Centre.
The District health department informed that these COVID Care units will be used to treat asymptomatic patients. “The critical ones who need life support will be transferred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital,” informed the spokesperson from the health department.
Trained doctors, nurses and paramedical staff will attend patients in those hospitals who will be placed under isolation for four days after every 10 days in duty.
Suman Choudhury, media expert, district Health Department appealed to the public for cooperation. “It is time the general public come in support of the administration. The number of cases has increased manifold and the resources have remained the same. It will take time for the officials from the administration to reach the resident of a COVID positive patient and demarcate it as a containment zone. Instead of waiting for the officials, we expect the public to treat that resident as a containment zone themselves,” said Choudhury.
He added, “Another thing we have observed is that the people are very eager to get tested. However, after their swab samples are collected, they start roaming around. This is not responsible behaviour, we expect them to remain indoors for at least 14 days after they have tested. Meanwhile, if their reports test COVID positive, they will be transferred by the administration.”
Overall, the situation is getting worse and Choudhury said, Cachar might get into a position where more than 100 people test COVID positive in a day and to deal with such a scenario the administration will need cooperation from the public. “We need to work together as friends,” he said.
