Three Arrested in Ashram Road Wine Shop Assault Case; Two Fugitives Still at Large

In a significant development following last week’s alleged violent altercation at the Ruby Wine Shop on Ashram Road, Silchar, three individuals have been arrested. The arrests come in the wake of a brutal attack on the shop owner, Sukanta Kar, who was allegedly severely beaten after refusing to provide wine on credit to associates of Sujit Das Choudhury, also known as Suranjit.

The police operation, conducted last night, resulted in the arrest of Sushanta Roy, Nitai Das, and Pijush Paul, all residents of Rongpur. These individuals are accused of participating in the assault on Sukanta Kar, which left him with severe head injuries, a fractured neck, and a broken femur. Kar has since been recovering at home under medical supervision.

Despite these arrests, Sujit Das Choudhury and Jayanta Chakraborty remain at large. The two suspects are believed to be in hiding to avoid arrest. The police have intensified their search efforts and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to their capture.

The incident occurred last Saturday night when Sukanta Kar, also known as Bapi, was closing his wine shop. Kar was approached by Sushanta, an associate of the infamous Sujit Das Choudhury, the President of the Kaibarta Unnayan Parishad. Sushata demanded a bottle of wine on credit, claiming that Sujit Das Choudhury would settle the bill later. Kar’s refusal led to a violent attack by Sushanta and six other men. The assailants used glass bottles and iron rods to inflict severe injuries on Kar and his staff and subsequently locked them inside the shop.

The attack has sparked outrage among the other wine shop owners and retailers. The Wine Shop Association of the district has unitedly condemned the assault on one of their own. They have submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner and Police Superintendent, demanding swift justice and enhanced security for local businesses.

Sujit Das Choudhury on the other hand is hatching a different story. Contradicting the claims of
Sukanta Kar, Choudhury on Monday said that the Ruby Wine Shop in Ashram Road was the centre of anti-social activities and a zone of catcalling and harassing women and girls who pass through the area. As per sources, Sujit and another of his associates are hiding to evade arrest.
