"Too early to celebrate," says Haialakandi DC after district reports 'Zero' COVID Cases

For the first time in the last five months, the Haialakndi district ended a day with zero COVID positive cases. After testing 434 samples on Saturday, the district’s health department did not find any infected individual.

The ‘Zero’ has brought some respite if not delight to the people of Hailakandi. However, deputy commissioner, Megh Nidhi Dahal asserts, “It is too early to celebrate.” He is of the opinion that the zero could be a factor of multiple aspects. “First of all the number of samples tested is low. Then, it might have happened that we have not targetted the testing well. Just testing 500 odd samples is not enough, we will have to test the right person at the right time,” said Dahal.

Adding, “Yes, zero is a really encouraging number but in this COVID situation, we will have to take a piece of good news with a pinch of salt. There is no room for the celebration of complacency. It is quite heartening that the number has dropped so significantly and so soon.”

Hailakandi had registered the first death in Barak Valley and at one stage most of the symptomatic cases were reported from the district. From just one Civil Hospital to multiple COVID Care Centres and putting thousands of inbound migrants in quarantine, the district had to build the infrastructure from the scratch.

The last death it reported was on September 11. “The death rate has gone down significantly. In fact, it has been a month without death. The overall situation has progressed a lot but we need to be on our toes,” added Dahal.

In this COVID situation, the second wave is a threat that looms large and that is why, as Dahal said, “It is too early to celebrate.”
