Torch rally in Barak Valley to promote Youth Olympics kickstarts from Silchar; DSA Secretary Bijendra Prasad Singh thanks Assam Olympic Association

The Youth Olympic Torch Rally has started across the state from Tuesday. A total of five teams of Assam Olympic Association (AOA) have held this rally separately in different districts. Rallies were also held today in Barak Valley which was overseen by executive member of the organisation Zahirul Haque.

The rally in Silchar started from Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium and ended at Rangirkhari Point. It crossed Central Road, Premtala, Nazirpatty and other prominent parts of the town. AOA officials handed the torch over to the office bearers of Silchar DSA and then the President of DSA, Babul Hore, secretary Bijendra Prasad Singh formally handed the electronic Olympic torch over to footballer Mrinalkanti Roy.

The opening ceremony of the event was held at the stadium. Various child artists performed there and four international players of the district were felicitated. They are former footballers Mrinalkanti Roy, Asim Chakraborty, Jadhav Paul and Thinu Chanuke. Bijendra Prasad Singh thanked the AOA for starting the rally in Silchar and also informed that 60 athletes from Silchar will be participating in seven events at the games.

He emphasised that participation was more important than winning. The rally was carried out in Hailakandi and Karimganj after Silchar. The delegation then reached Guwahati the following afternoon.
