Tragedy Strikes in Cachar: Three Feared Dead After Attempting to Retrieve Carcass from Well

A night intended for rest and respite turned tragic late Sunday in the Tractor Tilla area of Lakhipur’s Fulertal in Cachar, as a sequence of ill-fated rescue attempts led to the suspected deaths of three local men.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was urgently dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of multiple individuals being trapped inside a well. Key local authorities, including Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta and Circle Officer Rituparna Bhadra, also hurried to the location to oversee the rescue operations.

The incident began at approximately 10:30 PM when residents noticed a dead chicken floating in the well that supplies their drinking water. In an effort to remove the carcass, they initially attempted to pump it out but were unsuccessful. Determined to resolve the issue, Amit Sen, a local Tuk Tuk driver, volunteered to descend into the well.

The situation quickly escalated when Amit failed to respond after entering the well. Concerned for his safety, Monojit Deb, another local resident, followed him down but soon also became unresponsive. The growing alarm prompted Prosenjit Deb, Monojit’s brother, to enter the well in a desperate rescue attempt, only for him to fall silent as well.

The gravity of the situation reached its peak when their father, Satyalal Deb, decided to climb into the well in a final attempt to save his sons. He too struggled but was fortunately rescued by Rajkumar Rikiason. Both Satyalal and Rajkumar experienced severe dizziness due to oxygen deprivation but have since fully recovered.

Despite the efforts of Fire and Emergency Services, who arrived promptly but lacked the necessary equipment to conduct a water rescue, the situation remained dire. The arrival of the SDRF, equipped with oxygen masks and cylinders, brought some hope as they managed to retrieve all three trapped men. However, the prognosis was grim as all were found unresponsive and have been rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where they are feared dead.

Cachar SP Numal Mahatta reflected on the somber events, stating, “An unfortunate chain of affairs unfolded here. The locals and the SDRF, along with the firemen, tried their best. Three individuals have been sent to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, and the other two are currently fine.”

This tragic incident underscores the perils faced by individuals undertaking impromptu rescues without proper equipment and training, and it has cast a pall of grief over the tight-knit community of Lakhipur. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and the official report on the medical conditions of the three rushed to the hospital is awaited.
