Tragic Drowning Incident in Udharbond: Two Young Cousins Lose Their Lives
In a heart-wrenching incident, two young cousins tragically drowned in a pond in Patimara Basti under Tikalpar GP in Udharbond. The victims, identified as 5-year-old Ankit Das and 6-year-old Samrajit Das, also known as Sangram, were playing near their home this Saturday (August 17) when the tragedy occurred.
According to reports, the two boys were playing in their yard after returning from school yesterday, at around 11 AM. Their families noticed their absence around noon and immediately launched a frantic search. The search ended in tragedy when Samrajit’s body was discovered floating in a nearby pond. In the same spot, Ankit was also found. Neighbours who rushed to the scene helped retrieve Ankit and Samarjit’s body from the same pond.
Both children were immediately taken to Salganga Model Hospital, where they were declared dead upon arrival. The bodies were later sent to Silchar Medical College for post-mortem examination. The grieving family conducted the last rites later that evening after bringing the children’s bodies home.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, plunging the region into mourning. Aminul Haque, former Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and former MLA of Sonai visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences. Sandip Das, the father of Samrajit, has been Haque’s personal driver for over 14 years. Haque expressed his deep sorrow, recalling the close bond he shared with the Das family. “I never imagined I would be carrying his son’s corpse. This pain is unbearable,” Haque said.
