Two young lovers, madly into each other but neither family accepts this union. While the girl’s father asks the boy’s father to control him, “Boys can’t be controlled”, he replies and says, “Control your girl, she keeps on calling my son”. They realise, this isn’t going to work but they can’t leave each other, so they dramatically take their lives.

A heartbreaking incident has shocked the Dharamkhal area of Silcoorie, in Cachar district, as a young couple was found dead, having allegedly taken their own lives by hanging from a tree behind Maharishi College in Silcoorie. The victims, a 17-year-old girl and her 18-year-old boyfriend were discovered in the early hours of Friday, following tensions between their families regarding their relationship. Locals when they saw the hanging dead bodies, they searched for their families and informed the police.

The girl reportedly left her house around 10 PM on Thursday, with her family unable to locate her despite their search efforts. Meanwhile, the boy also left his home around 10:30 PM. Villagers found their bodies early the next morning and notified the Ghungoor police station.

The boy’s father recounted the troubling events leading up to the tragedy, mentioning that the girl’s father had confronted him earlier in the evening about their children’s relationship. According to the boy’s father, the girl’s father accused his son of visiting their house frequently. “He had complained to me about my son and asked me to control him as he frequents their home to meet the girl. I said, I can’t control him as he is a boy, you control your daughter, she is the one who meets him,” the boy’s father said. “You control your home, is what I said.”

In the meantime, the boy had left home late at night on Thursday. When his father asked where he was headed, he replied he was going to see the girl as her father had hit her in the head and she was bleeding. But his father didn’t allow him to go. “I asked him to go back home and be there. But he left again to meet a friend to call her and ask if she was okay as his phone didn’t have recharge. Then he left but never returned home. I kept looking out towards the road from my veranda, but he never came back”.

Local residents informed the police around 5 AM, but they expressed frustration with the authorities’ delayed response, alleging that officers arrived at the scene only at 10 AM. The bodies were later sent to Silchar Medical College for post-mortem examination.
