Tripura chit-fund scam: CBI arrests Hailakandi trio, to be presented in competent court
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three absconding accused on Thursday in a Tripura chit-fund scam from Hyderabad, Hojai (Assam), and Vellore (Tamil Nadu). The accused, Minnatullah Barbhuiya, Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya, and Imdadullah Barbhuiya, all hail from Hailakandi, Assam, and were directors and associates of Kama (Indian) Projects and Services Ltd.
Minnatullah Barbhuiya is a resident of Mohanpur village in Algapur; Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya, also from the same village, is a permanent resident there. Imdadullah Barbhuiya is similarly also from Mohanpur, Algapur in Hailakandi.
The CBI had taken over the case from the Tripura Police, investigating multiple FIRs, including West Agartala PS Case No. 164/2014, Kumarghat PS Case No. 27/2013, and Teliamura PS Case No. 105/2012.
The accused allegedly collected huge sums from investors under false promises of high returns, despite lacking approval from SEBI and RBI, and misappropriated the funds.
Having evaded investigation for years, Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs) were issued against them by the Special CBI Court, Agartala. On February 6, 2025, CBI successfully tracked and arrested them. They will be produced before the Competent Court for further proceedings.
