Tripura Woman Dies After Delivery in Silchar’s Mediland; Family Cries Negligence, Hospital Cites High-Risk Case
Yet again, a private hospital in Barak Valley finds itself at the centre of serious allegations and this time it is Silchar’s well-known Mediland Hospital. Anamika Das from Tripura has reportedly died after alleged negligence by the hospital’s staff and doctor. A video of the incident has gone viral, showing patient’s family expressing outrage. The details of what happened are deeply concerning.
According to the family members, the woman had given birth and started experiencing breathing problems soon after. However, the hospital staff reportedly told them everything was normal. The family alleges that they were made to wait for hours without proper medical attention, and the absence of a doctor made the situation worse. Eventually, the woman passed away inside the hospital.
The woman’s husband has raised serious allegations against the hospital. He stated, “Since 9pm after delivery, my wife had breathing issues. The nurses and doctor said it was normal. I raised the concern again, so they sent an emergency doctor who didn’t even bring a stethoscope. My wife couldn’t breathe, but he didn’t check her properly and said everything was fine.”
He further added that around 1am, he called Dr Upadhyay, and only then did the hospital decide to shift her to the ICU. “After being shifted, she spoke with me and seemed better. But at 4am, they said she needed double oxygen. She couldn’t talk anymore. They told me that if the oxygen didn’t help, she would be put on ventilation,” he claimed.
The family accused the nurses of ignoring the patient’s condition and being busy with their mobile phones instead of calling for urgent help. They say precious time was wasted, and timely intervention could have saved her life. The husband’s detailed timeline points to a series of missed warnings and unprofessional behaviour.
Video footage shows angry loved ones gathered at the hospital demanding justice. The woman’s family has now approached the administration, calling for a proper investigation and strict punishment for those responsible. They say, “We don’t want this to happen to anyone else. The guilty must be punished.”
Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Dr Kishore Upadhyay of Mediland Hospital stated that the patient was already categorised as high-risk, which is why she was referred to their facility from Dharmanagar. “The baby showed very limited activity inside the womb, and was in distress. So, we performed an urgent operation after obtaining proper consent from her relatives,” he said.
Dr Upadhyay added that post-operative shortness of breath is not uncommon in such cases. When her condition worsened, the patient was moved to the ICU and placed on ventilation. “All necessary steps were taken, including consultation with relevant departments. A cardiologist conducted an echocardiography and found her heart valve was narrowed. We informed the family at every stage, explaining everything in simple, understandable language,” he added.
The doctor also claimed that the husband did not initially express any complaints about the treatment. “He was emotional and even hugged me, saying I had done my best. It was only after they went outside and spoke to other relatives that he seemed to change his mind and began accusing us of negligence,” said Dr Upadhyay. He firmly denied any lapse from the hospital’s side and maintained that the medical team did everything possible to save the patient.
According to the death certificate issued by the hospital, the woman’s death has been recorded as “natural,” with the time of death marked as 9pm on 14 July. This timing is particularly significant, as it matches exactly 24 hours after she reportedly began experiencing breathing difficulties — a concern her husband insisted was repeatedly dismissed by the medical staff.
This is not an isolated incident. Not long ago, a woman died after childbirth at Central Hospital in Kalain, sparking huge protests. Just days before that, RE Hospital in Silchar went viral for allegedly amputating a man’s genitals without his consent. Now, with this case at Mediland, serious questions are being raised about the state of healthcare services in Barak Valley.
