
Truck - Auto Head-on collision in Meherpur; 5 injured, 2 critical
Massive road accident in Meherpur, Silchar where as many as five got injured out of which two are said to be in serious condition. At around 2:30 PM a truck on its way toward the town from Silchar Medical College and Hospital side collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw which was headed towards SMCH. Just next to the United Bank of India branch in the Ghungoor area the accident took place.
Eyewitnesses said that the rear wheel of the truck damaged the auto and injured the passengers. “Both had room to move safely, but the speeding truck could not control nor could the auto-rickshaw. We saw people bleeding and immediately rushed them to Silchar medical college and hospital. The auto driver was brutally injured and so were the passengers,” said the owner of a tea-stall located right next to the accident-spot.
The autorickshaw is registered under AS 11 CC 6348 while the truck’s number plate read, AS 11 AC 6350. Jamal Uddin Mazumder a resident of the Botertal area was driving the auto-rickshaw and is now admitted in critical condition. The doctors in SMCH said Masuk Ahmed, son of Basha Mia a resident of the Salchapra area is also critical. The other three are Subash Nunia,(46) Sanjib Nunia(26) and Kamal Nunia. All of them are residents of Fakirtila.
Meanwhile, Cachar Police managed to nab the truck driver. Identified as Tulsi Das (62) is now in Police custody.
It is worth mentioning here that just a couple of months back, in the same Meherpur area, a truck ran over a procession leaving 2 dead and 21 injured. Today too, the locals blamed the truck for speeding out of control.
