Two crushed under Tata Sumo at Nutanbazar

Two persons were crushed under the wheels of a Tata Sumo on Silchar-Aizawl road at Nutanbazar in Cachar district late on Monday night.

According to sources, a speedy Tata sumo crushed down Prashanta Nath and Shibu Rabidas near a Kali temple at Nutanbazar, about 20km from Silchar, around 3am last night. Both of them succumbed to their injuries while being taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Prashanta was a member of the village defence party (VDP) at Nutanbazar and Shibu was a resident of Panibhora Basti. A youth of Harijan Basti at Nutanbazar Mithailal Rabidas was also injured in the accident. Both of his legs were fractured and he is admitted at SMCH, locals said.

Sources said the news of an unidentified man with a suspicious body language wandering at Panibhora Basti started making the rounds in the area on Monday night following which a large number of local residents came out and managed to get hold of the man around 2am. The residents took the man to hand over him over to the VDP near the Kalibari temple. Soon after, the Tata sumo (which was on its way to Silchar from Aizawl) crushed the persons while passing by the area and fled away.

The unidentified man, who was caught by residents at Nutanbazar, whisked away from the spot after the accident happened. Local residents have blamed reckless driving for the accident and demanded that the sumo driver be arrested.
