Two dead bodies recovered from Son Beel; "CM called to take stock after boat sank," MLA Bijoy Malakar

Last evening, a ‘hand boat’ capsized in the wetlands of Son Been in Karimganj. At around 4:30 pm, the small boat was sailing from Fakuragram to Kalyanpur with five passengers when it turned upside down. There was a strong storm-induced breeze blowing through the air making the water restless.

Out of the five passengers sailing on the boat, Nilesh Das his son, 17-year-old Ajit Das, and 7-year-old Dhanu Das, son of Manoranjan Das were rescued. Nilesh Das is the owner of the boat and all of them are residents of Fakuragram village. 50-year-old, Ujjala Das, wife of Amaresh Das, a resident of Kalyanpur village, and 10-year-old Hasi Das, daughter of Bishnupada Das, a resident of Santipur village were missing.

The search and rescue operation continued throughout the night. Today morning, the officials recovered two dead bodies. Vanlal Nampui Biate Circle Officer Karimganj informed that the bodies were recovered from the stretch between Fakuragram and Kalyanpur where the accident took place. The bodies were recovered after 17 hours of the accident.

Ratabari MLA, Bijoy Malakar said that the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma called him to take stock of the situation. “There is no road connecting the two villages and that is why residents of both sides use boats to travel to their family members’ house. Unfortunately, as it was a small boat, it sank during the storm. Had it been a larger boat, they would have reached their destination safely,” stated the MLA.

The unfortunate incident and the demise of the two individuals have hit the locals as a shock.
