Violent Brawl Erupts at Ashram Road over wine on credit, Sujit Das Choudhury allegedly attacks owner

A violent altercation broke out last night at the Ruby Wine Shop on Ashram Road, Silchar, leaving the owner and his staff seriously injured. The incident occurred when the owner, Sukanta Kar, refused to give bottles of wine on credit to several individuals allegedly associated with Sujit Das Choudhury, a self-proclaimed leader of the Kaibarta Samaj.

According to police reports and CCTV footage, the situation escalated quickly when Sukanta Kar denied a request from a man named Sushanta, who claimed to be acting on behalf of Choudhury. Despite threats from Choudhury himself, Kar stood firm, resulting in a brutal attack by Sushanta and six other men. The assailants used glass bottles and iron rods to inflict severe injuries on Kar and his staff and subsequently locked them inside the shop.

Emergency services, including the police and CRPF, were called to the scene to manage the chaos. The police have registered an FIR at Silchar Sadar Police Station against the seven individuals involved in the attack. Kar, who sustained severe head injuries, a fractured neck, and a broken femur, was admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital and is now recovering at home under medical supervision.

The FIR mentions the accused as Suranjit Das Choudhury alias Sujit, Jayanta Chakraborty, Rahul Paul, Nitai Das, Sushanta Roy, Pijush Paul and Shibu Das

In a statement to the media today Kar said, “Last night while I was closing my wine shop, one person came and asked my staff to give him a wine bottle on credit. My staff said we didn’t know about credit, so he then approached me. He revealed that his name was Sushanta and Sujit Das Choudhury sent him. He demanded a bottle and said Sujit would pay me later. I refused to give because this is my hard-earned business. We run an alcohol shop after paying so much tax to the government and above that Sujit Das Choudhury and his party have more than 50 thousand rupees credit yet to be paid. Sujit then called me and asked me to give Sushanta the bottle of wine or else there would be consequences. I ignored his treat and was doing my normal business. He called me again to ask where I was and that he was coming for me”.

“A few minutes later, he and his gang came to my shop and used abusive language against me and started hitting me with whatever came to their hands. There were seven people along with him. His men brought glass bottles from a nearby store and broke them on my head. It was a murder attempt. Later he locked me and my staff inside the shop from the outside, ” added Sukanta Kar.

Contrary to Kar’s account, Sujit Das Choudhury has presented a different narrative. In videos circulated on social media, Choudhury accused the Ruby Wine Shop of being a hub for illegal activities and a gathering spot for men who harass women. During a press conference, he claimed, “Last night, my sister was harassed by drunk men in front of Ruby Wine Shop. This establishment attracts rowdy behaviour and is a nuisance to our residential area. We demand its closure and relocation.”

The incident has sparked significant concern and debate within the community, highlighting tensions between local businesses and residents. Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the incident, and the community is awaiting further developments.
