Violent confrontation erupts between two groups over illegally occupied government land at Kashipur, Police restores law and order

In a tense and hostile showdown today, two groups clashed over the contested possession of government land at Kashipur, situated within the Udharbond Assembly Constituency in Cachar district. The incident, which was allegedly triggered with the forceful demolition of houses by one group, further escalated long-standing tensions in the area.

The land illegally occupied by both the groups originally belonged to the Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), which had established a camp on the site. However, the subsequent abandonment of the camp by the organisation effectively transferred ownership to the Government, given its status as a statutory body under the Ministry of Defence.

Over time, the abandoned land became the target of illegal settlers who gradually encroached upon it, constructing houses and places of worship. This contentious situation reached a boiling point when the two groups attempted to seize more land today, leading to the violent confrontation.

Allegations of a local land mafia’s involvement in attempting to take control of a temple’s land in the area for days have also surfaced. In response to the violent confrontation, local law enforcement agencies, including the Police and CRPF, swiftly arrived at the scene. The Circle Officer of Udharbond was also present to help pacify the tumultuous situation.

At present, law enforcement agencies have implemented strict patrols in the area to prevent any further untoward incidents and to maintain order. The situation remains volatile and authorities are working diligently to restore peace and resolve the dispute.
