Ward commissioner Ashim Das demonstrates manpower; a rally of 3000 hits the road
Municipality ward number 18 commissioner Ashim Das has been making headlines since last few days. And he made sure he did not miss the opportunity today also. Thousands of people marched in a procession today to demonstrate their support for the ward commissioner. They also opposed the complaint lodged against him by the group of youngsters.
On July 19, a case was filed against Ashim by a member of a social work team alleging that Das and his party workers manhandled him and his friends in Das Colony area. The complainant and his friends wanted to start a cleanliness drive in Silchar and for that, they went to the DC and the chairman of Municipality board. On the chairman Niharendra Narayan Tagore’s instruction, they went to meet and seek the permission from the ward commissioner Ashim Das.
In response to the allegations, Das counter-attacked the young group of objectionable behaviour. He said they were involved in physical intimacy and were about to get beaten by a mob for their actions. Ashim said that he managed to rescue them from public outrage. Das also went to the Rangirkhari Police station to put forward his side of the story.
The officer in charge of Rangirkhari Police station Sahabuddin Barbhuiya speaking to Barakbulletin.com said that he has heard both sides and is investigating the matter. Barbhuiya refused to comment on the ongoing case and said, “A case has been registered against Ashim Das and we will investigate the matter exactly how we investigate all other cases. Today’s rally or any political stature of anyone involved in the case does not make a difference to us,” said Barbhuiya.
One female member of the young brigade told us that all of them are feeling intimidated, “Yesterday we were being chased and threatened by strangers. Today a huge rally is out on the road calling us all different names. We were out for a noble cause. Now this has come to the extent where we are worried about our security,” said the member.
Deputy commissioner S Lakshmanan is also monitoring the scenario closely. He is of the opinion that the matter is being blown out of proportion with all this showmanship. Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Roushan too asserted that Police is doing its job and the investigation is on track. He also said, special measures will be taken to ensure security to the youngsters if needed.
