Weather disrupts air traffic at Silchar Airport: Air India diverted to Guwahati, Alliance to Imphal due to low visibility
Silchar’s Kumbirgram Airport, the sole airport serving the three districts of Barak Valley, is facing significant challenges due to incessant rainfall and overcast weather conditions. The adverse weather has emerged as a major hindrance for air traffic, causing disruptions and delays in flight operations.
The current weather conditions in the region have been exacerbated by reports of mudslides in Meghalaya and landslides on Haflong Road, adding to the urgency for efficient air travel options, especially in emergency situations.
This morning, the scheduled arrival of the Air India Kolkata – Silchar passenger aircraft (AI753) at 6:30 am was thwarted by low visibility, forcing it to divert to Guwahati. Fortunately, the aircraft was able to depart from Guwahati and successfully land in Silchar at 10:20 am, ensuring the safe arrival of its passengers.
In a similar vein, the Fly Big aircraft scheduled to depart from Guwahati to Silchar was delayed due to the unfavorable visibility conditions at the destination. The airline opted to wait until visibility improved, prioritizing the safety of the passengers and crew.
Regrettably, the Alliance Airlines flight from Kolkata to Silchar faced a similar fate. The aircraft was unable to land at Kumbirgram Airport as scheduled, and the captain received instructions to divert the plane to Imphal, a nearby alternative airport. As a result, the Alliance Airline flight is still en route to its intended destination with its passengers.
The authorities at Kumbirgram Airport are working diligently to manage the situation and minimize disruptions caused by the inclement weather. Passengers are urged to exercise patience and take necessary precautions while planning their travel during this period. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued warnings for heavy rainfall in the districts of Barak Valley.
