Wife, Cousin Held for Kalain Man’s Murder; Wife Cites Domestic Abuse, Police Probe Extra-Marital Affair

A gruesome murder case has rocked the Kalain area in Cachar after police arrested a woman and her cousin for allegedly killing her husband. The incident came to light when the blood-soaked body of 55-year-old Shibu Das was recovered from the veranda of Hilara Block Headquarters High School on Saturday morning (October 4).

Shibu Das, a factory worker, had come home in Hilara from Harangajao during puja vacations. Reportedly, he left home on Friday evening and did not return. The following morning, his blood-stained body was discovered on the veranda of Hilara High School.

Police investigations have revealed that the murder was allegedly planned by Shibu’s wife, Sumita Das, with the help of her cousin, Monoranjan Nath. Both have been taken into custody. During interrogation, Sumita reportedly confessed that she got her husband killed as he used to physically abuse her. However, the suspicion of an extramarital affair is also being probed, as it may have also played a role in the crime.

According to police sources, Monoranjan admitted to killing Shibu at his sister’s request. He allegedly travelled from Borkhola to Kalain on the night of the incident, both drank together that night, and then attacked him with a brick, killing him instantly.

The incident came to light after locals discovered the body and informed the police. Officers from Kalain Police Station and Silchar rushed to the scene, accompanied by a sniffer dog team. The body was later recovered in the presence of a magistrate and sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.

It was Shibu’s son, Shivam Das, who first lodged a complaint, alleging that his father had been murdered. Acting on the lead, police detained Sumita Das for questioning on Monday (October 6), during which she reportedly confessed to the crime. Based on her statement, a police team raided Borkhola that night and arrested Monoranjan Nath.

Both the accused were produced before the Cachar District Court on Tuesday (October 7), where police sought Monoranjan’s remand for further interrogation. Investigators are now probing whether others were involved and if suspicion of Sumita’s alleged extramarital affair triggered the murder plot or if it was because of domestic abuse.
