With elections knocking at the door, liquor smuggling on the rise; Rangirkhari Police confiscates 500 bottles
Based on a secret tipoff, Rangirkhari Police launched an operation and confiscated a consignment of liquor that was being illegally smuggled.
In the Nagatilla area, the Police official traced the truck. However, they failed to nab the driver. Investigating officer, Gias Uddin Laskar said that it is possible the driver got a hunch about the Police operation and thus ran away abandoning the truck.
The truck ( AS 11 BC 9616) has been towed and kept under the supervision of the Police. Laskar said, “We will summon the owner of the truck and investigate the matter further.”
He informed that around 50 crates of KD 50 Whiskey bottles have been confiscated. The truck was loaded with plastic materials and within that, about 500 bottles of KD50 Whiskey were hidden. The Police is now investigating the matter further to find out where the consignment was headed to.
It is worth mentioning here that illicit smuggling of liquor during elections is a common phenomenon and as per Police sources it is on the rise. A few days back, the deputy commissioner of Cachar met her counterparts in Meghalaya and Mizoram to ensure that the vigilance is kept high.
The chief election commissioner has already declared that the polling in Assam will take place in three phases. All the legislative assembly constituencies in Assam will go for polling on April 1. Considering that, the Police has upped the vigilance.
