Workshop on Rabindra Sangeet, music and Vedas start in Silchar

A workshop to educate today’s youngsters about Rabindra Sangeet and music from the Vedas started today in the Elora Heritage Hall of Silchar. The “Sumana Deb Choudhury Memorial Rabindra Sangeet and Ved-Song Workshop” will continue for 5 days. The workshop is being organised by two young artists and cultural activists of Silchar, Debarshi Roy Choudhury and Biswaraj Bhattacharjee. The workshop will sum up on April 29 and will be followed by their production on Sunday, May 1, 2022.

In this workshop, experts from various cultural fields will enlighten the participants with their knowledge and experience. Speaking about the workshop, Biswaraj Bhattacharjee, an organizer of the workshop said, “In this workshop, we have not only focused on Rabindra Sangeet, along with that we are also trying to impart the knowledge of Music from the Vedas. There are many songs by our beloved Viswakavi Rabindranath Thakur which are directly influenced by the Vedas. We will have separate classes on those songs. Our panel of experts include Biswajit Roy Choudhury, a senior Rabindra Sangeet singer. He is dealing with the Rabindra Sangeet part along with me. Panchali Dhar, another exceptional singer, is an expert on the Ved Gaan. She is taking that part. Debarshi Roy Choudhury, my co-organizer will teach the modifications made by Rabindranath to the taals and other taals in general”.

“A very important part of Rabindra Sangeet is the pronunciations and grammar. It’s not easy to pronounce some words for everyone. For that reason, we have requested Manoj Deb, former anchor of All India Radio to teach the participants about pronunciation and grammar. In this way we have tried to make the workshop interesting and not just with songs”, Bhattacharjee further added.

Along with the musical part of the workshop, there are discussion sessions as well. Those sessions will reflect upon the history and life of the great Nobel Laureate. The organizer cum exceptional singer further added, “For the knowledge of everyone, we have also scheduled two discussion rounds where our participants will have the chance to know and interact with some experts in this field. Debasish Das, a great columnist and a knowledgeable writer will explain the connection of Rabindranath with our town Silchar. Along with him, Amitava Deb Choudhury, a poet, will elucidate the life and works of Rabindranath. He will also talk about the history behind the songs and poems written by Rabindranath Thakur”.

The workshop started today with around thirty participants from 4 in the evening. The organizers are very hopeful about the outcome of this workshop. On May 1, with a production display of the participants, the workshop will come to an end.
